エッセルは設計したオランダ人技師の名。
国の重要文化財。
熊本県の三角港(西港は世界文化遺産)、宮城県の野蒜港(「幻の港」と呼ばれることも)と並び明治三大築港の一つ。

重要文化財に指定されている閘門。富岩水上ラインに乗れば水上エレベーターが体験出来ます。ミニサイズのパナマ運河。現役で使用しているので仕方ないが、実際の操作盤は現代化され、管理棟のガラスも新しいのが残念。閘門自体は素晴らしい。いつまでも現役を維持してもらいたいです。

無料ガイドさんのお話を聞いてから庭園を回ったんですけど、凄く落ち着いた雰囲気がとても心地良かったです。
道中にカメが黄昏ていたのを見たのですがとても可愛いかったです。
