👍👍 Matera is magical. It may be one of the oldest continually occupied cities in the world. Settled by the Romans since 251 BC. Stepping into the Sassi area is a trip back in time. It is now a grey monument to many cultures. Families lived in caves without running water until 1960s when people moved aw...

👍 The place gives its best in the SUNSET, when lights are on and one starts seeing a never ending Nativity Scene. Simply TO CONTEMPLATE. That's all. It's worth spending a while to imagine... and empathize with big feelings of ancient sharing such as only very aged people have really experienced.

😐 The location, which is 1.5 km from the city centre, is stupendous, imposing and elegant. The rooms are all large, soundproofed, well air-conditioned and clean, the bathrooms bright with noteworthy showers. Unfortunately it cannot be evaluated, at the moment, with more than three stars due to the se...

Church of Saint Peter 'Barisano' image

Church of Saint Peter 'Barisano'
Catholic church
👍 This was the biggest of the 3 rock churches we visited in Matera. It was more complex and had catacombs as a bonus. I strongly recommend it is worthwhile to consider buying the combined ticket for this and the other churches (plus other casa attractions). Look for the OltreLAtre symbols around town.

Church of Saint Roch
Church

👍👍 There is a stunning view and the church is really great located. I liked even more the external appearance than interior. 👍👍 When we arrived we weren't sure they were ready for us. It needs booking in advance. The father of the family gave us superb audiovisual guides in English.. 👍👍 A dive into the ancient traditions of our grandparents. The entrance ticket costs €4 and it takes less than an hour to visit. It collects tools, documents, tools, environments, testimonies of a past of work and sacrifices. You really have to look at every little corner because it can tell a story.

Church of Our Lady 'delle Vergini'

👍👍 Takes just over an hour to walk here from Matera. Be aware that there is a very steep hill to go down, then flat for a way, then steep incline again and another bit to climb to get to the site. There are also caves around the area to explore by foot. The church is almost never open but there is a l...
